Bruce Domeby’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious. Bruce began coming to the Y to play indoor pickleball this past winter. Bruce has been around the Y for the majority of his life, but when he began visiting the Duneland Y to play pickleball this past winter, he found he had a special connection with the Duneland Y.
Bruce saw a flyer at the Duneland Y with Dr. (John) Forchetti’s name. Dr. Forchetti is the namesake of our Forchetti Family YMCA Center for Early Learning. Through his generosity and donation, we were able to relocate our Early Learning Center to 270 E. Burdick Road. Bruce was able to arrange a time to meet Dr. Forchetti at the Y this month and thank him for his life-saving work, something that means so much more than any donation could.
20 years ago on March 4, 2022, Bruce woke up to what he thought would be a normal day, until he started feeling some pain in his chest. The pain progressed, so he went into the hospital in Portage.
When he arrived at the hospital, the doctors determined he was having a heart attack and needed to be transferred to Valparaiso for immediate surgery. Bruce’s cardiologist was Dr. John Forchetti, who successfully placed a stent in Bruce’s coronary artery to clear the blockage to his heart, saving Bruce’s life.
Bruce recalls that after Dr.Forchetti had successfully cleared the blockage, everyone cheered like they were at the ballpark and someone had hit a home run.
Bruce says that he is forever grateful for Dr.Forchetti, that he swung for the fences that day, saving his life and giving him the opportunity to experience many joys, one of the most notable being the joy of having four grandchildren.
These days, Bruce lives life to its fullest, being very involved with multiple sports including several local Pickleball groups. He frequents the Duneland Family YMCA, and you can probably find him on the Pickleball courts at our facility.
