AUGUST 2018 SENIOR CENTER SCHEDULE

Duneland YMCA Names Jeanne Kasarda August Senior of the Month

Jeanne has been an active Y member for 70 years! Once a committed volunteer for many Y’s throughout Northwest Indiana, she continues to stay active with the Duneland Y by participating in multiple group exercise classes as well as our ever-expanding Senior group.
Born August 14th, 1935, Jeanne grew up in Gary, Indiana. After graduating in 1953 from Lew Wallace High School, she worked as a secretary for 7 years at US Steel Industries. She married NIPSCO Supervisor, John Kasarda, in 1957 and together they had 4 wonderful children. Jeanne, not only a successful wife and mother, has always been an active member of society. Working with her Sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, she supported the non-profit organization Hoosier Boys Town. She kept herself busy as a Cub Scout Den mother and Girl Scout Troop leader for many years all while contributing over 1,000 hours as a Pink Lady Volunteer for St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, Indiana. After her husband passed away in 1989 she worked the next 3 years for CPA, Charles Moore. She spent the following 20 years employed by ophthalmologist, Dr. L Bejec.
Jeanne has always led a very full life and continues to fill her time quilting, gardening, sewing, and attending fitness classes at the Duneland Y. She participates in classes and activities every day during the week and walks at least a mile every day. Like Jeanne, many seniors stay involved at the Y. Activities provided in the Duneland Y Senior Center include a drawing class, bingo, book reviews, lunch day trips, card and table games, and a monthly potluck luncheon. Group exercise classes for active older adults are also available Monday through Friday. To find out more about all the wonderful activities the Y offers, check out the weekly schedule. Schedules are available for pick up at the Y Welcome Desk as well as online. website. For more information about Y programs and services, visit www.dunelandymca.org, or call 926-4204.
